Despite snow and ice in the forecast, our ‘Buildings at Risk' (B@R) team kickstarted the new year with our first ‘B@R Brunch’ in the beautiful village of Netherseal, Derbyshire’s most southerly village.

The team welcomed a wide range of people from the local community and across the county. It was a fantastic opportunity to catch up with some of the B@R project’s existing volunteers whilst also meeting new individuals interested in the initiative.

The event started at Netherseal Village Hall with a relaxed registration and a chat between the team and volunteers over a hot drink and a snack, followed by a brief introduction led by Anna Cluley, DHBT’s Heritage Development Officer.

After Anna’s introduction, the group set off to explore the heritage of historic Netherseal! The volunteers were supported by experienced members of the DHBT team and given some hands-on training in how to complete a simple building condition survey using the B@R app.

The conveniently placed Richard Johnson Almshouses, around the corner from Netherseal Village Hall, proved the perfect training opportunity.

After the training exercise and answering some volunteer questions, the group continued their stroll through the village.

Along the way, volunteers had the opportunity to complete building condition surveys on a range of Grade II listed buildings and monuments, get advice from the DHBT team and share their interest in local heritage with likeminded people in a relaxed, sociable environment. As well as the Grade II listed structures in the village, the group were treated to other historic gems such as the childhood home of Sir Nigel Gresley, pioneering railway engineer, and the Grade II* listed Church of St. Peter and Netherseal Old Hall.

The sun shone and a thoroughly enjoyable, sociable (but chilly!) session finished at Netherseal Baptist Church. The group then returned to Netherseal Village Hall to enjoy further conversation, some well-deserved refreshments and the opportunity for new volunteers to complete their training and project registration. An extremely successful, enjoyable morning for all!
