Guidance
Looking for guidance on a historic building?
Since 1974, the DHBT has been supporting owners and custodians of historic buildings with expert advice and support.
As part of our new DHBT Academy, we're now formalising this service to offer initial, impartial guidance for those facing challenges with repair, conservation or reuse.
Over the coming months, we are expanding our network of trusted Panel Members - experienced craftspeople and heritage practitioners - who will be available to offer guidance on best practice.
This may include:
- A short visit (up to 2 hours)
- Informal guidance on your situation
- Signposting to specialists or tradespeople who can offer paid, independent services if desired
This introductory service will be free of charge to all DHBT supporters. If you're not yet a supporter, we ask that you consider joining following any visit.
How to request guidance
If you'd like initial support with a historic building, please complete our enquiry form, below. Tell us a little bit about your situation, the kind of guidance you're looking for and your location. We'll be in touch to discuss next steps.

Become a DHBT Academy Panel Member
Lend your expertise and help shape the future of Derbyshire's Heritage
The DHBT invites experienced craftspeople and heritage professionals to join our DHBT Academy Panel - a respected network of skilled volunteers committed to supporting the custodians of historic buildings across the county.
As a Panel Member, you'll contribute just two half days per year (unpaid), including time for brief reporting. In return, you'll play a valued role in safeguarding some of Derbyshire's historic buildings.
Panel membership offers:
- Recognition as part of an expert group aligned with a respected charity
- The chance to positively influence conservation outcomes
- Opportunities to build relationships with property owners, local authorities, and other heritage professionals
- A platform to promote traditional skills and best practice in conservation.
DHBT Academy Panel Members are called upon when custodians of historic buildings seek guidance. We match enquiries to the most appropriate Panel Member(s), who provide initial guidance and signpost the custodian to professionals or craftspeople.
We'd love to hear from you if you:
- Are experienced in a heritage craft, trade or professional discipline
- Are passionate about supporting the sustainable future of historic buildings
- Would like to be part of a respected and purposeful county network
Please complete the DHBT Academy 'Panel Member Form' and make sure you've read the 'DHBT Academy Rules'.
