Help Us Tackle South Derbyshire’s ‘Cold Spots’ This Spring

Our Buildings at Risk (B@R) project continues to go from strength to strength and it’s all thanks to our fantastic volunteers.
So far, 100% of Grade II listed buildings and monuments in Amber Valley and Derby City have now been surveyed using the digital B@R app, developed by the West Midlands Historic Buildings Trust with support from Historic England.
Along the way, volunteers have helped identify almost 100 previously unknown ‘at risk’ buildings, allowing us to work with local authority partners to protect these vulnerable places.
Survey work is still underway in South Derbyshire and Erewash, and progress has been incredible. Since launching in August 2025, nearly 90% of Grade II listed structures in South Derbyshire have already been surveyed, while Erewash has reached almost 80% coverage just one month after launch.
Now, as the weather begins to improve, we’d love your help to finish the job!
Can You Help Us Survey Our ‘Cold Spots’?
We’re focusing on areas with remaining unsurveyed buildings (our so-called ‘cold spots’) and spring is the perfect time to explore them. Many sites are slightly off the beaten track, making them ideal for walkers, runners and cyclists looking for a new route while supporting local heritage.

How to Find the Buildings in the App
Finding these locations is simple:
Open the B@R app and tap Layers on the map screen
Select Listed Buildings
Enter the list number in the search bar
You can also filter the map to show only unsurveyed buildings:
Tap More
Select Map themes
Choose Not surveyed South Derbyshire
Unsurveyed buildings will appear highlighted in bright blue.
Even if a building isn’t visible from a public right of way, marking it as “Not accessible” is still extremely helpful — this information is shared with our local authority partners.
