On Monday night DHBT representatives attended the planning committee meeting to witness a significant moment for Belper’s industrial heritage.

The public gallery was filled to capacity, with standing room only on the balcony; a clear indication of how deeply the community cares about the future of these iconic buildings.

Two applications were considered and approved: Listed Building Consent for the Grade I North Mill and a planning application for the Grade II East Mill.

While several concerns were raised during the debate, particularly around car parking, the committee recognised the critical importance of securing the repair and restoration of the Grade I North Mill.

It is understood that the Conservation Officer has applied a condition requiring works to the North Mill to be completed before development commences on the East Mill, along with the production of a Conservation Management Plan, both welcome safeguards for these nationally important structures.

The mood in the room was overwhelmingly positive, with applause greeting the committee’s decision. There is genuine hope that the scheme will be fully delivered over the next four years.

This milestone represents years of dedication from numerous groups and individuals who have worked tirelessly to reach this point.

Derbyshire Historic Buildings Trust would like to extend its sincere thanks to everyone who has contributed to making this possible and looks forward to the buildings being saved.
