Sustainability Award
Commendation – Cressbrook Hall, Buxton
Evans Vettori Architects Ltd for a private client
Cressbrook Hall is one of the most picturesque country houses in the Peak District. Built in 1835 and Grade II listed, it has now been sensitively restored and returned from a commercial wedding venue to a single private residence, combining traditional conservation with pioneering sustainability.
Led by Evans Vettori Architects, the project integrated a suite of renewable energy systems and technologies to achieve net-zero carbon heating and hot water, replacing the former heavy-oil infrastructure.
All interventions were carefully designed to preserve the building’s historic character while ensuring its long-term environmental and economic resilience.
Judges praised the scheme as a model of how sustainability can be seamlessly woven into heritage restoration, commending its thoughtful approach to balancing 19th-century fabric with 21st-century innovation.
