Reuse of an historic building

Commendation: Ilkon Arts

Architect: Chris Williamson RIBA

Design Team - Chris Williamson, George Crete, Richard Henshaw and Macara Press-Jones

ILKON is a Contemporary Arts Gallery in a former disused Methodist Church.

Founded by an attendee of Ilkeston Grammar between 1967-1975, the project is in honour of his Arts teacher, Dr Richard Venning, who hugely inspired him to pursue a career in Architecture.

Originally opened in 1936, the church was designed by Mr John Higginbottom, son of Architect William Herbert Higginbottom. He created it in such a way to benefit the acoustic of the choirs, something the gallery are now grateful for as they would love to also use the gallery to house bands, choirs, plays etc.

The architect, Chris Williamson, has perfectly balanced the contemporary appeal while still being sympathetic and revering to its history. The gallery opened in January 2023.

Judges were very impressed not only with the architectural project, but also the way in which the project has facilitated bringing creative arts to the local community and wider region.
