DHBT Architecture Awards 2025

Reuse of a Historic Building

Winner – Riber Castle, Matlock

Cross Tower Ventures Ltd/The Wright family

A second award for Riber Castle, recognising its remarkable transformation and sensitive reuse.

Once a dramatic ruin dominating the Matlock skyline, this Grade II listed landmark has been given new life through its conversion into 26 high-quality apartments.

The project demonstrates how an ambitious vision, patient conservation, and thoughtful design can secure a sustainable future for one of Derbyshire’s most iconic historic buildings.

Judges praised the scheme for its integrity and determination - a long-term labour of love that has brought a much-loved ruin back into use while preserving its commanding presence in the landscape.
