Restoration of a Historic Garden or Landscape

Commendation – Limestone Tower, Tissington Estate

Tissington Estate with Evans Vettori Architects Ltd

Within the parkland of the Tissington Estate, an intriguing limestone tower has been conserved and partially reconstructed through the Farming in Protected Landscapes (FiPL) grant scheme.

Long referred to as the Tissington Silo, the tower’s true origins remain a mystery - possibly an observatory or even a munitions store from the First World War.

Set within a disused quarry surrounded by farmland, it has been carefully stabilised and restored to safeguard its future within the historic landscape.

The project reinstated the building’s distinctive conical roof using timber rafters, natural slate, and traditional leadwork, providing lasting protection while maintaining the tower’s striking form in the countryside.

Judges commended the project for its craftsmanship, sensitivity, and the way it brings new understanding and care to a curious and little-known feature of Derbyshire’s rural heritage.

Project team: Tissington Estate & Fisher German, Evans Vettori Architects, and ASBC (lead contractors).
