Restoration of a Historic Garden or Landscape

Commendation – The Crescent Slopes, Buxton

Bench Architects

Set opposite John Carr’s masterpiece The Crescent, The Slopes form an essential part of Buxton’s Georgian landscape. This commendation celebrates the meticulous restoration of one of its twelve historic stone urns - a feature that has adorned the terraces since 1818.

Originally carved in 1753 by Robert Parsons of Bath for Lord Burlington, the urns were later relocated to Buxton by the 6th Duke of Devonshire and adapted by Sir Jeffry Wyatville as part of his landscaping scheme.

Over the centuries, damage, vandalism, and weathering took their toll, leaving several urns in poor condition.

The restoration of Urn 12, led by Bench Architects, involved complete reconstruction using durable Stoke Ground Base Bed Bath stone with new design refinements to address previous structural weaknesses and prevent water ingress.

Concealed fixings, drainage solutions, and improved detailing now ensure the long-term preservation of this distinctive ornament within its historic setting.

Judges praised the project for its technical excellence, research-led approach and contribution to the ongoing conservation of Buxton’s celebrated townscape.
