DHBT Architecture Awards 2025
Historic Building in an Urban Setting
Winner – The Grammar, Heanor
Once a proud landmark at the heart of Heanor, the Grade II listed former Grammar School had stood derelict since 2015.
This ambitious project has brought it back to life - transforming it into The Grammar, a vibrant mixed-use hub that now provides high-quality business space, adaptable community facilities and a revitalised hall for social and cultural events.
Commissioned by Amber Valley Borough Council and supported by the Future High Streets Fund, the scheme aimed to revitalise the town centre while securing the long-term future of this key heritage asset.
GSSArchitecture led the design and conservation work, later taking on the role of Contract Administrator alongside A&S Enterprises Ltd as main contractor.
Poor-quality modern extensions were removed to reveal the historic fabric, while new strategic additions provided essential circulation and plant space.
The building now operates fully on electric power and boasts an A-rated EPC, demonstrating how heritage restoration and sustainability can go hand in hand.
Key conservation highlights include the meticulous restoration of the iconic copper cupola and reinstatement of the decorative vaulted ceiling in the main hall - both carried out using traditional craftsmanship and techniques.
Judges commended the project for its exemplary approach to conservation-led regeneration, its environmental ambition and the way it has reconnected an important civic landmark with the daily life of the community.
Specialist contractors included Hodkin & Jones (plaster ceiling restoration), Lindas Group (cupola restoration), Hemmings Floor Restoration Ltd, and Phillips Joinery Ltd (George Widdows window restoration).
