DHBT Architecture Awards 2025
Historic Building in a Rural Setting
Winner – Haddon Hall, Bakewell Haddon Hall
Nick Cox Architects
At the heart of one of Derbyshire’s most celebrated historic houses, the Long Gallery at Haddon Hall has undergone an exemplary conservation project addressing significant structural decay to its bay window.
The survival of the Gallery’s exquisite plaster ceiling, decorative oak panelling and rare etched window glass depended on this complex intervention.
The bay was carefully dismantled stone by stone and rebuilt using salvaged materials alongside newly carved stonework, while the surrounding structure was stabilised through underpinning, crack stitching, and roof repairs.
Thanks to support from the Historic Houses Foundation and the Culture Recovery Fund (Round 2), the work was completed within a challenging grant timeframe.
Judges praised the project for its precision, respect for craftsmanship and sensitive coordination between architect, stonemasons, and plasterers - safeguarding the Long Gallery’s integrity for generations to come.
Main contractors and craftspeople included RM Eaton Stonemasonry Ltd and Jamie Miles, Lime Plastering (Chesterfield).
