Historic Building in a Rural Setting

Commendation – Riber Castle, Matlock

Cross Tower Ventures Ltd/The Wright family

Once a dramatic ruin overlooking the Derwent Valley, Riber Castle has been transformed into an exceptional example of rural heritage restoration.

Built in the 1860s by John Smedley and long a landmark on the Matlock skyline, the castle had stood derelict for decades.

The project, led by the Wright family of Cross Tower Ventures Ltd, has meticulously restored the Grade II listed structure and adapted it into 26 high-quality apartments, securing its future for generations to come.

Works have involved stabilising and conserving the surviving stone fabric, reconstructing key architectural features, and carefully introducing new elements to meet modern standards while respecting the historic integrity of the site.

Judges commended the project for its sheer ambition and perseverance over many years, noting the care taken to balance historic authenticity with contemporary living standards.

The scheme stands as a remarkable achievement in rural conservation and adaptive reuse - bringing new life to one of Derbyshire’s most iconic buildings.
