DHBT Architecture Awards 2025

Exemplary Conservation Project

Winner – Haddon Hall, Bakewell

Nick Cox Architects

This year’s Exemplary Conservation Project Award recognises the outstanding conservation work at Haddon Hall.

The project focused on the complex repair and reconstruction of the Long Gallery bay window, a defining architectural feature showing signs of serious structural failure.

Working with exceptional skill and sensitivity, the team dismantled, repaired, and rebuilt the bay stone by stone, preserving the original fabric wherever possible while hand-carving replacements to restore stability and integrity.

The restoration safeguarded the Long Gallery’s rare 17th-century plaster ceiling, oak panelling, and etched window glass, all of which were at risk due to long-term movement and water ingress.

Undertaken under the custodianship of Lord and Lady Edward Manners, the project reflects their continued commitment to the care and longevity of Haddon Hall.

Funded by the Historic Houses Foundation and the Culture Recovery Fund (Round 2), the works were completed to the highest conservation standards under considerable time pressures.

Judges highlighted the unity of architect, stonemason and plasterer in achieving a seamless restoration.

Main team: Nick Cox Architects, RM Eaton Stonemasonry Ltd and Jamie Miles, Lime Plastering (Chesterfield).
