Exemplary Conservation Project

Commendation – St John the Baptist Church, Dronfield

Crooks Architecture Ltd

This remarkable project focused on the conservation of the medieval stained glass in the Chancel of the Grade I listed St John the Baptist Church, Dronfield, a building whose roots date back to the 13th century.

The scheme involved the careful removal, conservation, and reinstatement of fragile glass fragments - some dating to the 14th century - which were integrated into newly designed protective glazing.

A bespoke system of hand-blown laminated glass was developed to protect the historic glass without visual disruption, maintaining the church’s extraordinary light and atmosphere.

In tandem, extensive stone repairs were undertaken using traditionally mixed lime mortars and carefully matched new stone sourced through the British Geological Society, ensuring compatibility with the medieval fabric.

Supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund , the project also engaged the community through talks, school workshops, and site visits, deepening local connection to this important place of worship and history.

Judges commended the project for its craftsmanship, innovation, and meticulous attention to detail - describing it as “a model of best practice in architectural conservation.”

Main team: Crooks Architecture Ltd, Holy Well Glass Ltd, Pinnacle Conservation, Adam Beaumont (Stonemason), and Jack Clare (Glazier).
