Anna Cluley and Miles McIntosh from our B@R team were at the University of
Derby’s Kedleston Road Campus on Friday.
Anna and Miles were invited by Dr Kathleen McIlvenna and Dr Cath Feely to present a guest lecture to a group of the university’s first year History students as part of their ‘Derby and The World’ module.
The session began with an introduction to our ‘Buildings at Risk’ project led by Anna,
DHBT’s Heritage Development Officer. As well as the background to the overall
project and its Derby launch in partnership with Derby City Council, students were
introduced to the innovative B@R app created by our colleagues at the West
Midlands Historic Buildings Trust, with support from Historic England.
The app is a pioneering digital tool that allows volunteers to record and monitor the condition of Grade II listed buildings. A colour-coded system is used to categorise buildings by their state of repair, creating an invaluable resource for conservation efforts.
After this presentation, students had the opportunity to ask Anna and Miles questions
about the B@R project and DHBT’s wider work. Miles, himself an intern with the
university’s ‘Derby Talent Programme’, also shared different aspects of his role as
DHBT’s Heritage Development Support Officer.
The session provided valuable opportunities for discussion and allowed students to
see firsthand how their studies could be applied to real-life public heritage projects. It
also introduced potential career opportunities that they might pursue upon
completing their studies.
