Commendation – Derby Market Hall

Lathams @lathams.uk  Client - Derby City Council

Derby Market Hall has undergone a significant architectural transformation, bringing new life and clarity to one of the city’s most distinctive historic structures.

Designed by Lathams, the project centred on the careful restoration and enhancement of the Grade II listed building’s defining features.

The works included a new copper roof and glazed lantern, reinstated historic entrance doors and elegant new glazed openings to the southern façade - all designed to strengthen the building’s architectural rhythm and enhance natural light within the hall.

Internally, the space has been rebalanced and opened up, with the refurbishment of original stalls, restoration of the feature staircase, and the recreation of the barrel-vaulted ceiling decoration that once animated the Victorian interior.

The result is a flexible, uplifting space that celebrates the craft, engineering and design quality of the original building.

Judges praised the project for its thoughtful architectural approach, noting how the interventions respect the historic fabric while providing a refined, contemporary clarity to the structure.

Main team included: Lathams, Wates, LDC Restoration, Longworth (Copper Roofing), NRA Roofing, Vision Joinery, Standard Patent Glazing, Holdsworth Windows, Canlin Castings, Smart Balustrade, Johns of Nottingham, and MAC Paving.
